Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a legal agreement between you and J&B Creations LLC (“J&B Creations,” “we,” “us”) governing your use of the Unread: Phone Detective mobile game and the website at playunread.app (together, the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. The game

Unread is a work of interactive fiction. You investigate invented cold-case mysteries by exploring a fictional character's phone and reaching a verdict. All cases, characters, victims, and events are fictional. Any resemblance to real people or actual events is coincidental. Nothing in the game is a factual claim about any real person or crime.

2. Eligibility

Unread is rated Teen (13+). You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent where you live) to use it. If you are under the age of majority, use the Service only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who agrees to these Terms.

3. License

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for your own non-commercial entertainment. You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, resell, or commercially exploit the game or its content except as allowed by law.

4. Subscriptions and purchases

Unread is free to start: the tutorial case and the first full case are free. Unread Pro unlocks the full case archive and a new case every week, offered as an auto-renewing subscription (weekly or yearly). Purchases are billed through the App Store or Google Play and are subject to those platforms' terms. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled; manage or cancel them in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Prices are shown in-app and may vary by region. Refunds are handled under Apple's and Google's policies; we generally cannot process them directly.

5. Leaderboard

Unread has a per-case leaderboard. Your result for a case can appear publicly to other players under a handle the app assigns you from a random identifier (for example, “DETECTIVE 4A7F”). You do not choose or type this handle and cannot change it, and nothing you write inside the game is shown to other players. Do not attempt to manipulate, falsify, or game leaderboard results. See our Privacy Policy for what the leaderboard stores.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to interfere with or disrupt the Service, attempt to access it in unauthorized ways, cheat other players' experience, or use the Service to break any law. We may suspend access to protect the Service or other users.

7. Intellectual property

The Service (including the Unread name, cases, writing, artwork, design, and software) is owned by J&B Creations LLC and protected by intellectual-property laws. These Terms don't grant you any right to our trademarks or branding except as needed to use the Service normally. You may share screenshots of your own results for personal, non-commercial purposes.

8. Disclaimers

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, J&B Creations LLC will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from or related to your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim will not exceed the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless J&B Creations LLC from any claims, damages, or expenses arising out of your use of the Service or your violation of these Terms or any law or third-party right.

11. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or to protect the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability) will survive.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Michigan, unless applicable law requires otherwise.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the effective date above. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
